Dušan Perčinakov is widely considered one of the most important Macedonian artists of the twentieth century. Although his works are highly recognizable, the artist has continued to fascinate audiences with his consistency, dedication, and perfectionism for nearly six decades. Two years after representing Macedonia in the Yugoslav Pavilion at the 1978 Venice Biennale, he became a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Skopje, becoming one of the most respected lecturers for several generations of students.
In his paintings and graphic works, Dušan Perčinov creates an instantly recognizable visual world, in which careful observations of his surroundings are transformed into complex abstract geometric compositions. The MoCA Skopje owns several of the artist’s works in various media and from different phases. The work “Sea,” created immediately after Dušan Perčinakov graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, is characterized by a radical reduction of elements on the pictorial plane. Already in “Flowering Island” and “Remnants of the Summer Night” a few years later, we see the artist creating more complex compositions, clarifying his vision for a pure, iconic visual language. “Suburb Motif 3,” part of a series of three small paintings, is representative of his sharp focus on dimension, scale, and order. Most of Dušan Perčinov’s works in the museum’s collection were acquired through purchase, including from the artist.
